Here's What You Might Be Getting Wrong About OCD

Hey Reader-

Parenting kids with OCD can be tough. Especially since much of how to navigate OCD is counterintuitive.

After over two decades supporting parents raising kids, teens and young adults with OCD, I have consistently seen a pattern in what parents get wrong about OCD.

In this episode, I break down the six most common things parents get wrong, that delay long-term progress and keep families stuck.

Getting a child with OCD to open up can feel impossible, especially when they say: "I don't know."

Here’s the game-changing question I have used in my practice and with my own kids:

“What does your OCD say will happen if you don’t do it?”

This does two powerful things:

✅ It separates your child from their OCD (so they don’t feel blamed or defensive)

✅ It reveals the intrusive thought or core fear driving their compulsion

Once you know the fear, you know what you truly need to tackle.

This one question can unlock insight—and progress.

Can constant screen time be a compulsion?

For some kids, constantly listening to music or watching shows and videos isn't about wanting to be entertained. In kids with OCD, this behavior can be a way of trying to avoid the intrusive thoughts and feelings that silence can bring. This is called compulsive distraction. Read more about compulsive distraction, how it differs from genuine enjoyment, and how to help your child if you notice this behavior.

Hi Reader- Without fail I always get emails from parents that ask me to extend my deadlines when they miss my emails or life gets busy. I don’t want that to happen to you, as we won’t be able to extend our deadline on this generous offer. That is why I am popping into your email one last time (in case you’ve missed all my emails this week) and letting you know that the offer to get 50% off all my classes in honor of OCD Awareness Week is ending tonight, Oct 17th at 11:59pm PDT. 🤎 You can...

Nothing warms my heart more than messages about how my courses have impacted families' lives. Like this one that was left on my course, How to Teach Kids to Crush OCD: Parents also found my Crushing OCD course for kids and teens helpful! You can watch this video below and hear what they thought: Today is the last day to get 50% off my online courses in honor of OCD Awareness Week. This offer expires at 11:59p PDT today, October 17th (with no exceptions so we can be fair to all parents). So be...

Helping our kids with anxiety and OCD can be counterintuitive; especially with OCD! Trusting your gut, or even an unskilled mental health professional, can sometimes make things worse. I learned that the hard way myself. After my kids had several bad therapists, I realized that my role was pivotal. Even now, with both kids seeing fantastic therapists, I am still the one dealing with their crises and immediate struggles 24/7. My guess is, so are you. That is why I don’t want you to miss the...
